CHASE FOLLOWED behind Adelaide barely paying attention. It wasn’t every day that a man proposed and was rejected.

Not that he blamed her. His proposal had been dismal and his reasons about everything other than her personal attributes.

This was why he had stayed away from respectable women. He didn’t have enough left in his heart to really offer them.

Sure, he could put Adelaide in a nice home and fine clothing. He could, he thought, provide her with children. But real emotion like eternal love? He didn’t think he’d ever feel anything like that again.

The explosion of sound from the kitchen snapped him out of his thoughts in an instant. Adelaide froze in front of him. Taking the step between them, he grabbed her about the waist and swung her around, starting back up the steps.

Running full speed down the hall, he yelled, “They’re here.”

Skidding into the music room he nearly tossed Adelaide at Max before he spun to close the doors. A man dressed in black stood at the top of the stairs. His heart seized in his chest even as he slammed the doors shut. “Get some chairs. We need to barricade the entrances.”

Si and Rex jumped to do as he bid. “Key, hide the women in the corner behind the pianoforte,” Chase commanded as he began shoving the back of the chair under the knob. “Who has pistols on them?”

“I do,” Max answered pulling not one but two from his waist belt. “I’ve been carrying since this entire business started.”

“I do as well,” Key called. “Never leave the house without one.”

Chase secured the second chair just as a loud thump shook the door. “Same here,” he said. “Rex and Si?”

Both men shook their heads. Max handed one of his pistols to Rex while Chase pointed at the fireplace tools. “Si, grab the poker. Let’s hope that rapier on the wall is sharp. Everyone else, find a second weapon.”He himself, grabbed the ash shovel from the rack. It would do just fine to knock a man flat on his back.

Max slapped him on the shoulder even as someone crashed into the door again. “I thought I was in charge.”

Chase gave his friend a sideways glance, grateful beyond measure his friend was by his side. He lightly punched Max’s arm. “You can be in charge the next time we’re attacked by a group of men.”

Max quirked a brow. “You say that as though you don’t expect it to happen. To be honest, though, trouble finds us.”

“Not after this. You’re all married men now.” He gave Max a wink.

The door banged again, nearly knocking down the chair and Max stooped into a crouch. Rex and Si moved to either side of them. Rex set his feet in a wide stance. “Chase will be too. The gypsy isn’t done with him yet.”

For the first time since he’d made that bet, he didn’t care. So what if he married Adelaide? There’d be far worse fates then being tied to a woman who challenged him at every turn while heating his blood to the point of boiling.
